Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledges of plant anatomy (cells, tissues and organs) and physiology (water and solute transport and photosynthesis)
Target skills and knowledge: This course offers a dynamic approach to the study of plant structure and development by integrating recent advances in Genetics and Molecular Biology. At the end of the course, the students will acquire information about endogenous and exogenous stimuli that are regulating the plant development, the genes involved in organ formation and the mechanism behind the transition from vegetative to reproductive development. The students will also gain basic skills on omics techniques and web tools in bioinformatics.
Examination methods: Exam modalities are:1) preparation and oral exposition of ppt regarding the depth study of topics covered during the course 2) a final oral exam.
Assessment criteria: The assessment will be based on the level of understanding achieved of the topics covered during the course and the ability to express them in a clear manner and appropriate language (technical terminology).
Course unit contents: Plant hormones: biological activity, biosynthesis, metabolism, transport and mode of action. Light, temperature and gravity as factors affecting plant morphogenesis. The plant ontogenetic cycle: seed germination, seedling growth, juvenility, phase transition, flower development, fertilization, sedd anf fruit development, plant senescence and abscission.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures: 48 hours
Classroom exercises: 16 hours
