Syllabus
Prerequisites: Fundamentals of physics, chemistry, biology and agronomy
Target skills and knowledge: The students will acquire understanding of:
basics of livestock feeding; livestock farming systems;
global and local trends of animal products demand and of livestock farming systems;
the impacts of livestock farming on climate, air, water and soil quality, and biodiversity; the mitigation actions and strategies;
the potential benefits for humanity associated with livestock farming systems, within the Ecosystem Services framework.
This will enable students to classify and describe livestock systems and to evaluate critically how their interaction and trade–offs with environment and human needs can be managed to improve sustainability.
Examination methods: written exam
Assessment criteria: The written exam will verify:
the knowledge of the topics acquired by the student;
his ability to describe topics critically and with correct terminology;
his ability to make logic connections between the course topics;
his ability to express judgements on the synergies and trade-offs associated with productive, environmental and socio-cultural aspects of livestock systems.
Course unit contents: This course examines livestock production following a system approach that integrates animals, environment and management, analysing the main interactions between them. Topics are summarized below.
Classification of livestock production systems: land use, feeds and livestock categories used, livestock products, production technologies, geographic locations. Livestock systems and production of human edible foods, animal foods and relations with human health, well-being and cultures. Basics of animal nutrition and feeding, parameters and indicators of feed resources use, production intensity and efficiency, animal welfare. Livestock systems and impacts on environment (soil, water, air and climate), nutritional, technological and management mitigation strategies. Livestock precision farming, organic livestock farming. Livestock systems and ecosystem services/benefits: food nutritional properties, livestock genetic resources, natural biodiversity, cultural landscape and heritage.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The concepts of each section will be illustrated with: lectures; discussions with reference to case studies; students’ exercises; guided visits to livestock farms. Lectures: 4 CFUs; discussions, exercise and farms' visits: 2 CFUs.
