Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basics on forest hydrology, hydraulics, GIS, and botany
Target skills and knowledge: The goals of the course are related to the comprehension of the characteristics, processes, functioning, and factors characterizing a watercourse as to be able to better manage it and to define river restoration projects.
The preparation of this course will be fundamental to permit an integrated valorization of the fluvial system, as to facilitate its sustainable management.
Specific aims will be related to:
1) Understanding the morphological characteristics of a river basin;
2) Characterizing the morphological unit of a mountain stream and a river, following its own development and morphodynamic;
3) Analyzing and quantifying the sediment dynamics along a watercourse (erosion, transport, deposition);
4) Detecting characteristics, role, dynamics, and management of the riparian vegetation, fluvial islands, and fluvial wood;
5) Understanding the impact (direct and indirect) oh the human pressure on the watercourses;
6) Defining river restoration activity.

The theory will be corroborated by the exemplification of study cases, video, and imagines; an active participation of the students will be required, particularly during the field and laboratory activities, in which their interdisciplinary capacity will be an asset.

- Oral examination;
- Oral presentation related to the field group activities (during the field visit);
- Technical report on laboratory activities.
Assessment criteria: Assessment criteria:

- Oral exam (70%): general knowledge of the topics, capacity to critically present and discuss more specific aspects, relating them also to interdisciplinary topics, and or related to personal or previous experience (i.e. field visits);
- Group oral presentation in the field (10%): during the field visits field measurements will be carried out in small groups, firstly in the field, subsequently a presentation will be prepared and finally presented to the class;
- Technical report on laboratory and field activities (20%): taking advantage of the laboratory results, and home working, a report will be prepared. It will contain, in the end, a river restoration proposal.

All parts must reach at least 18/30.
