Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of silviculture system, forest management and economics of forest resources. A basic and applied knowledge on Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis is also strongly suggested to successfully participate to the laboratory activity related to the planning and design of transportation infrastructure to support environmentally sound forest operations.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will acquire awareness and understanding of the analysis and the design principles of the forest engineering to the transport of wood and/or forest biomass from the harvesting site to the processing site.
The course will thus expand the competence and practical experience of the student on 1) planning and design of forest road network and on 2) planning environmentally sound forest transport. The students will face in particular with transportation systems typically of the mountainous region.
The scientific-technical competences on forest transportation acquired during the course will be complemented by an effective skill on GIS and design software acquired during the laboratory activity.
Examination methods: The examination consists in:
- A presentation of a case study on forest road network planning and / or on a forest road design project (Module 1)
- A presentation of a case study on a design project on a cable crane line (Module 2)
- Evaluation of the comprehension of the course subjects (Modules 1 and 2)
Assessment criteria: Participation: active attitude in lectures and during class exercises and laboratory activity
Program: knowledge of the topics, capacity to present and discuss them in a critical way, to place them in the correct context and to understand logic relationships with other topics of the course and, in general, with the other disciplines
Case study: capacity to apply appropriate methodologies for the analysis of the case study and on the ability to explain the appropriate solution/s
Course unit contents: Over the last years, considerable efforts have been made in refining and improving forest transportation practices to support environmentally sound forest operations. The planning and the design of the forest transportation infrastructures and systems as well as the related harvesting techniques are key elements to meet not only economic return, but also to encounter environmental challenges (such as reduction of GHG emissions, erosion control, biodiversity conservation…) of the forest operations.
During the course, the students will acquire the awareness and understanding on the meaning of sustainable forest transportation through the learning and the practice on the following specific two modules:

Module 1 (CFU 5; Teacher in charge: Stefano Grigolato): Forest accessibility and Forest road network (5 CFU)
• Meaning of the forest accessibility and forest road network
• Introduction to the forest transportation network planning
• Introduction to the design of a forest road
• Practice in GIS and Road design laboratory
• Transportation technologies and systems in trafficable terrain
• Potential environmental disturbance and best practices
• Practice in transportation system in trafficable terrain (field activity)

Module 2 (CFU 4; Teacher in charge: Raffaele Cavalli):
• Transportation technologies and systems in non-trafficable terrain
• Introduction to the planning and design of the cable logging systems
• Potential environmental disturbance and best practices
• Practice in transportation system in cable logging systems (field activity)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching and learning methods include lecture-based input; discussions; reading assignments; field practice activity; practice in GIS and Design laboratory; activity in small teams.
