Syllabus
Prerequisites: Fundamentals of chemistry and biology
Agronomy
Target skills and knowledge: To study the agro-environmental issues in agricultural systems and in particular the application of
animal waste ; to study the strategies and methods to rationalize the fertilization and animal waste ; to provide the theoretical basis to implement the Nitrate Directive action program
Examination methods: Written test. 4-5 questions on the programme
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on the understanding of the topics, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them in an autonomous way.
Course unit contents: Credit 1 Agriculture and pollution. Origin of diffuse pollution.
Credit 2 The integrated cycle of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous.
Credit 3 The relationships between fertilizer input and crop yield. The fertilization efficiency: concept and calculation. The agronomic use of the animal wastes. Effects on the physical, chemical and biological soil properties.
Credit 4 Fertilization and pollution: nitrogen (effects on water, soil and air).
Credit 5 Fertilization and pollution: phosphorous (effects on water and soil).
Credit 6 Control of the non-point source pollution. The carbon sequestration.
Credit 7 Best management practices.
Credit 8 The Nitrate Directive action program
