Syllabus
Prerequisites: General botany: plant cell, tree organization, plant tissues, xylem and phloem, primary and secondary growth.
Target skills and knowledge: Aim of the course is to give the knowledge about wood structure and technological properties of most commonly used Italian woods, and the capacity to identified them and the most common abnomalities.
Examination methods: Examination will be in oral form.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will consider the knowledge of the theoretical arguments and the ability to identify wood species
Course unit contents: Macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of wood of softwood and hardwood. Chemical composition and ultrastructure of cell wall. The mechanism of wood formation. Variation of wood structure. Abnormalities of wood. Macro- and microscopic characteristics of most commonly used Italian woods and their identification, with indications regarding their most frequent uses. Density and specific gravity. Hygroscopicity. Shrinkage and swelling. Mechanical, thermal, acoustical, electrical properties.
