Syllabus
Prerequisites: A background in genetics, cellular biology, molecular biology, anatomy, and histology is required
Target skills and knowledge: This Course aims at transmitting to MD students all the fundamental notions on the mechanisms that regulate immune system functioning, with special attention to its ability to guarantee the organism’s homestasis against microbial microenvironment. In view of the continuous expansion of our knowledge about the molecular mechanisms underlying immune responses, particular attention will be paid to the signaling pathways potentially targetable by appropriate immune interventions. In this regard, the Course will provide detailed information on the principles and modalities of vaccination and immunotherapy approaches in infectious diseases and cancer, respectively. Moreover, this Course will provide MD students with the basic notions about the alterations/dysfunctions that the immunological mechanisms could undergo to, in order to empower them with the necessary instruments to better understand during their future learning itinerary all the immunopathologic conditions that they will frequently encounter in their clinical practice.
Examination methods: About 90 multiple choice tests will be administered, with 1/2/3 correct answers out of 5. The questions will cover all the program of the Course, and a special algorithm validated in over 30 years of teaching will be utilized to evaluate the student’s learning. No penalties are foreseen for mistakes; the payload will be fixed to 62% of the total score, and the top of the scale will be fixed to 92%. Under special circumstances, an interview may integrate the multiple choice test.
Assessment criteria: The questionnaire will be administered at the end of the Course, exhaustively covering all the items forming the teaching core. The questions will be prepared to specifically verify the ability of the Students to connect the different compartments, components and elements of the immune response.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The Course is articulated into two phases:
1) A first cycle of lessons where the fundamental components of the immune system will be described; this analytical description of the elements constituting the immune system will be followed by the effort to provide an integrated view of their functioning within the economy of the immune response. In this setting, particular attention will be given to stress the plasticity of the immune system and its subtle regulatory potential
2) A second cycle of lessons will provide the cultural bases to tackle the study of immune-mediated pathological situations. In this setting, special attention will be placed on the mechanisms underlying the different hypersensitivity reactions according to Coombs and Gell’s classification, as well to the pathogenetic mechanism leading to allergy, autoimmunity, transplant rejection and evasion of the immune response by tumor cells.
