Prerequisites: Knowledge of basic Organic Chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: Analysis of spectral properties of organic molecules (magnetic resonance, infrared, UV-Vis and mass spectrometry) aimed to assign their correct structural formula
Examination methods: Three written tests based on the program:
1st test: chemical formula, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy;
2nd test: NMR of proton and carbon 13;
3rd test: assignment of the structure of an unknown compound on the bases of its spectra.
Assessment criteria: Scores of the tests:
1st and 2nd test: max 30 points (30 questions)
3rd test: adds max 1 poin to the average of the two previous test.
Course unit contents: Part 1. Elemental composition, raw formula and information acquired from it, unsaturation number. Mass spectroscopy. IR spectroscopy and assessment of functional groups. UV-Vis spectroscopy.
Part 2. Nuclear magnetic resonance of organic molecules (1H and 13C). Structural analysis with the aid of NMR spectroscopy.
Part 3. Assignement of the correct structural formula to an unknown organic molecule through the analysis of its spectral properties (as studied in part 1 and 2)
