Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of anathomy, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, general chemistry and organic chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of:
- mechanism of action of drugs;
- types of bonds and other factors involved in drug-target interactions;
- main classes of antinfectious, anticancer and cardiovascular drugs.
For each class or single drug, understanding of:
- physico-chemical properties;
- mechanisms of action;
- structure-activity relationships
- side effects (if related to structural features).
Examination methods: There are 2 required parts to pass the examination:
1. Written examination on antinfectious and anticancer drugs, consisting in 20 open question, worth 0-1,5 points each (max total 30). It is compulsory to pass the written examination to access the oral test. The obtained grade is always valid.
2. Oral examination on cardiovascular drugs. It can be taken in the same day of written examination or in different days: if taken later, the acquisition of knowledge on the written program will be verified.
The final grade is the weighted average between the written grade (2/3) and the oral grade (1/3).

For foreign students the examination consists in a multiple choice test (in english).
Assessment criteria: Evaluation of acquired knowledge about physico-chemical properties, mechanisms of action and structure-activity relationships of drugs; evaluation of the specific terminology used; evaluation of the ability to identify similarity and difference among the drug classes
Course unit contents: For all the below mentioned classes: structures and chemical properties, mechanism of action, structure-activity relationship, clinical uses, side effects, spectrum of action, mechanism of resistance (if present).
LOCAL ANTI INFECTIVE AGENTS: ANTISEPTICS AND DISINFECTANTS.
SYSTEMIC ANTI INFECTIVE AGENTS: ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIMYCOBACTERIAL.
ANTIPARASITIC AGENTS: antimalarial and antiprotozoal drugs.
ANTIFUNGAL AGENTS.
ANTIVIRAL AGENTS.
ANTICANCER AGENTS: classical anticancer drugs, adjuvant and targeted therapy.
CARDIOVASCULAR AGENT: cardiac agents, antiarrhythmics and antianginal agents, diuretics, drugs acting on the renin-angiotensin system, calcium channel blockers, vasodilators, antiplatelet drugs, anticoagulant drugs, statins, antidiabetic drugs.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom lectures with slide and video projections.
Classroom activities using interactive techniques (e.g. "Think-pair-share" strategy)
Learning games to evaluate the acquired knowledge.
