Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at deepening the examination of the cities from the physical point of view, their breakdown according to thematic principles, also through the reciprocal comparison and the identification of models of urban composition. 3. Laboratory Work
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will occurr by considering the following weights:

2. 25%=Exercise work
3. 50%=Laboratory
Course unit contents: The class is made of lectures and of one or more drawing exercises, in order to evaluate the necessary communication and knowledge capabilities.
The lectures are meant to draw a path of analitical decomposition within some "starting" documents of Modern Urban Planning, among which: the Pro Helsingfors Plan (1918), the Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan van Amsterdam-AUP (1935), the Greater London Plan (1944), the Finger Plan for Copenhagen (1947), the Generalplan för Stockholm (1952), the General Plan for Assisi (1955), the Schéma directeur d’aménagement et d’urbanisme de la région de Paris-SDAURP (1963-64).
The program aims at particoularly analize the relations among the drawings of general transformation of the city and the detail plans for some city parts of big dimensions (Bosch en Lommer, Slotermeer in Amsterdam), the open spaces at the scale of the new democratic city, the consitution of a public commitee related to big architectural projects (the satellite cities of Stockholm, the new towns of London, the villes nouvelles in Paris).
In the second part the class is meant to measure the actuality of the modern urban planning tadition, through the analysis of some more recent plans, such as the General Plan of Rome (2000), the Översiktplan for Stockholm (1999) the General Shanghai Development Plan (1995-2001), in oder to evaluate the elements of continuity and/or newness with the european tradition.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: theoretical or practical seminars on specific argouments, class exercises, textes
Additional notes about suggested reading: Specific textes and some images on the single lectures will be provided on-line, where possible.
