Prerequisites: Basic 3D modeling
Target skills and knowledge: the principal aim of the course is acquiring theoretical and practical skills fro the comprehension and the representation of the architectural and engineering project. It provides also basic knowledge of digital survey and renderings.
The topics covered during the course aim in particular:
1) to enhance the students' learning capacity referring to space management.
2) to increase the communication skills of the project through an appropriate representation of the project using new technologies
3) developing independent judgment in the management of three-dimensional space and in the communication of the project.
Course unit contents: After summarizing the main 3D modeling commands, the course is structured in a series of lessons that deal with the following topics:

- perspective;
- creation and modification of digital images;
- Animations;
- creation and modification of complex surfaces;
- digital survey.

The theoretical lessons are dedicated to learning the rules of perspective so that the students are able to represent the project according to this method. The same geometric rules allow to obtain plans and elevations of buildings from pictures or perspectives.
For this section there are 3 exercises:
1) assigned plan and elevation the student has to outline an interior perspective.
2) assigned a painting the student has to obtain plan and elevations of the represented buildings.
3) Design of a poster related to a building that contains: plans, elevations, sections, territorial settlement, a photograph taken by the students, a photomontage of the same photograph with a modification created by them.

Creation of digital images:
This section focuses on creating images related to the project and its modification:
a series of lessons are dedicated to:
- Photoshop to enhance or edit images.
- 3D Studio Max to obtain images from a digital model (basic renderings and photorealistic renderings).
For this section there are four exercises:
1) basic rendering of an interior during the day
2) basic rendering of an interior at night
3) photorealistic rendering of an interior by day
4) photorealistic rendering of an interior at night.

In addition to creating static images, the course provides skills to animate objects (movements in virtual space and morphological deformations). 3D Studio Max helps to obtain single frames and Premiere is useful to edit the movie.
For testing these skills the students have to manage an exercise:
1) animation of a pillar from the drawing of the section by lines to its 3D realization.

creation and modification of complex surfaces:
Very often students limit their design to "Euclidean shapes" because they are not able to imagine and represent complex surfaces. This section of the course aims to fill this gap through Rhinoceros that allows the students to easily create and modify complex surfaces. Also in this case there is a testing exercise:
1) creation in a virtual environment of a complex solid and realization of a physical model (with common materials) using parallel sections.

digital survey:
this section provides practical and theoretical lessons on the use of survey technologies (laser scanner and photogrammetry). A particular focus is dedicated to the creation of virtual models (point clouds and meshes) obtained through photogrammetry. Exercise:
1) digital survey of a selected building, graphic realization of a poster containing graphic elaborations obtained from the survey (plan, elevations, section).
