Syllabus
Prerequisites: Structural Analysis and Design 1
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide the general criteria, elements, technical and regulatory directions, and independent judgement for the structural planning of buildings, with particular reference to the constructions in seismic areas.
Examination methods: Ongoing tests during the course.
Written test during other sessions.
Assessment criteria: Scholars shall demonstrate that they have understood the basics information on seismic behaviour of building structures. Scholars shall demonstrate that they have good knowledge of the contents of the first 4 points of the course program, and that they have gained basic knowledge of the general criteria explained during the final part of the course. This knowledge is needed in practice to understand and afford aseismic desing of building structures.
Course unit contents: 1- 3-dimensional behaviour of buildings. Bracing systems. Distribution of horizontal loads.
2- Local and global ductility, definition of plastic hinge.
3- Static and kinematic theorems. Collapse analysis of structures.
4- Basics of structural dynamics. Single degree of freedom linear systems. Non linear systems. Elastic response spectrum and design spectra.
5- Code criteria for aseismic design of building structures.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures. Videos of experimental tests (when possible, visit to the experimental laboratory during the execution of special tests) and pictures of structures damaged by earthquakes for a better understanding of structural behaviour. The course also includes the assignment of 4 homeworks, that will be, at least partially, corrected in class, so that scholars can self-evaluate their learning ability.
