Prerequisites: The student must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities foreseen by the courses of Infectious Diseases of Animals and Avian Pathology, Parasitic Diseases,Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Animal Nutrition, General Veterinary Anatomical Pathology.
Target skills and knowledge: The student must acquire knowledge and abilities related to the role of the veterinary as a public health operator in the context of problems related to emerging zoonoses (epidemiology, impact, control), the antimicrobial- and antelmintic-resistance (genesis, laboratory tests and interpretation of results), the use of pharmaceuticals in production animals and their residues in the environment and in food, the animal nutrition in view of consumer safety, the forensic pathology, and the anatomical pathology techniques used to diagnose infectious diseases or for the evaluation of interaction with human activities.
Examination methods: At the end of the Course, the student is given an oral examination, by all the teachers, on the topics covered.
Assessment criteria: The fullness of knowledge and skills acquired and the ability to relate them to the health and well-being of animals and humans are assessed.
Course unit contents: Feeding and animal nutrition in the food chain. The quality and safety of food for farm animals: assessment methods in-field, at the feed mill and in the livestock farm. Transfer of the main contaminants from feed to animal products (milk, meat and eggs): mechanisms and extent of carry-over, containment opportunities.

Toxicology of residues and pharmacosurveillance: National Residues Plan. Use of drugs in farm animals. Formation of residues in meat, milk, eggs, fish. Food carcinogens, mycotoxicosis, illegal anabolic treatments, persistent organic pollutants (dioxins, PCBs, organochlorine insecticides, PFAS, methylmercury). Homeopathic and placebo. Analytical methods for the identification and quantification of residues (ELISA, RIA, HPLC, GC, MS, AAS).

Applied pathology techniques:
anatomopathological techniques for the diagnosis of infectious and parasitic diseases; pathological changes related to the exposure to chemical substances, and methods of ascertainment; forensic approaches for the evaluation of interaction with human activities.

Antimicrobial resistance and public health:
biological bases and relevance of the phenomenon; laboratory tests and their interpretation.
Infectious zoonoses and globalization:
epidemiology, impact and control of the main emerging zoonoses.

Parasitic zoonoses and globalization:
overview of the main emerging parasitic zoonoses with case study analysis for the acquisition of new approaches to disease control: disease driver analysis, prioritization, economic analysis of disease impact, risk assessment and scenario analysis.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures with support of slides and videos; seminars by experts; guided visits to production facilities and institutions operating in public health; practical exercises in the laboratory and in the necropsy hall; interactive activities with discussion of case studies through workgroup.
