Syllabus
Prerequisites: ANIMAL WELFARE part:
Veterinary ethology and physiology of stress, nutrition and feeding of animals, rearing techniques
VETERINARY LEGISLATION part:
None
VETERINARY BIOETHICS part:
None
COMPANY ORGANIZATION part:
Basic knowledge of economics, knowledge of farm animals rearing systems and organization of a company.
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of skills to be acquired relative to:
ANIMAL WELFARE part:
- to carry out an integrated assessment of animal welfare considering a plurality of measures (productive, behavioural, physiological, health);
- to identify welfare issues in different contexts (on-farm, during transport, at the slaughterhouse, at the kennel)
- to formulate proposals for sustainable interventions to be implemented in the short, medium and long-term, suitable to remove criticalities for animal welfare.
VETERINARY LEGISLATION part:
- To know the principles of deontological code for the veterinary profession
- To study the main information related to the civil and criminal liability of the veterinary profession.
- To deepen the legislation about animal welfare and animal protection.
- Knowledge and ability to manage and follow the regulatory bases governing the role of the vet in the daily profession
VETERINARY BIOETHICS part:
- to identify the main bioethical issues involved in the exercise of the veterinary profession;
- to develop "ethical reasoning abilities" in veterinary ethics
- to identify bioethical issues and communicate with the customer and public opinion;
COMPANY ORGANIZATION part:
• to know organization and management of a company
• To analyze the relationships between companies and the institutions that are part of the agri-food chain and veterinary public health.
Examination methods: The exam will be written with open-ended questions.
Assessment criteria: Capability to apply the current national and EU legislation in practice

Capability to apply national and EU legislation regarding animal welfare in the professional practice through the solution of proposed study case.

Capability to solve ethical questions
Course unit contents: ANIMAL WELFARE part:
- Introduction to the concept of AW (2 hrs)
- The 5 freedoms: Basic principles and orientation of legislation on animal protection. Institutions dealing with AW (European Commission, EFSA, OIE) (2 hrs)
- Evaluation of the AW: Animal Based Measures or Resource Based Measures sources. Evaluation schemes of AW (4 hrs)
- Good nutrition: the importance of good feeding and availability ofdrinking water to keep the animal healthy and vital (2 hrs)
- Good housing: freedom from discomfort (structures, safety of the materials used); microclimatic conditions (T °, humidity, the presence of unpleasant odours) (2 hrs)
- Good housing: freedom of movement (space available, type of floor) (2 hrs)
- Good housing: cleanliness and hygiene of the facilities that host the animals (2 hrs)
- Good health: implement prevention or rapid diagnosis; the problem of zootechnical or aesthetic mutilations (4 hrs)
- Appropriate behaviour: stereotypes and abnormal behaviours such as signs of poor welfare and tools to prevent them (2 hrs)
- Freedom from fear and distress: ensuring conditions that reduce mental suffering (human-animal interaction) (2 hrs)
- Transport and handling of animals (4 hrs)
- Protection of animals during slaughtering (2 hrs)
Practical part:
- to visit the websites of Institutions and Associations dealing with AW, enlightening their mission and activity (4 hrs)
- to visit a commercial farm to apply the principles of welfare assessment (4 hrs)
- a hands-on activity for the Animal Based Measures (2 hrs)
VETERINARY LEGISLATION part:
Knowledge related to Veterinary Legislation, Forensic Medicine, animal protection and professional ethics:
- National Veterinary Organizations & Associations;
- Veterinary deontology;
- Legal(Criminal)and administrative liability for the veterinary profession;
- Sanctions and jurisdiction;
- Identification and registration of small animals;
- Identification and registration of large animals;
- Informed Consent in Veterinary Medicine;
- Privacy legislation;
- Animal welfare;
- Animal cruelty and dangerous dogs legislation;
- Legislation, Registration and Control Procedures for Veterinary Medicinal Products;
- Safety and health at work;
- Animal Transport.
Practical session:
UE and Italian laws: on-line databases; veterinary prescriptions; Animal transportation documents
VETERINARY BIOETHICS part:
1) Bioethics and Veterinary Medicine
- The role of Bioethics in the biomedical field and how it is articulated;
- The main theoretical approaches to ethical issues in veterinary medicine
- How to recognize the bioethical aspects inherent in the main veterinary issues;
2) Ethical reasoning abilities and client assisting decision
- Critical reasoning and problem-solving in Veterinary Ethics
- Five steps methodology and problem-solving discussion
Ethics in client assisting decision and communication
COMPANY ORGANIZATION part:
- Business organization
- The company definitions, nature, purpose
- Costs and analytical accounting
- Management control
- Budget and budget analysis
- The Business Plan
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course provides most of the teaching as frontal lectures. In the modules are planned analysis activities and discussion of case studies even in the presence of experts.
For the Animal Welfare module are planned two visits at the farms to apply on the field the methods described during the lectures.
