Common characteristics of the Integrated Course unit

Prerequisites: The student should know the structure and biology of the eukaryotic cell and the the anatomy of the organs involved in the immune response.

Required foundation courses: Veterinary Anatomy I, Veterinary Anatomy II, Biochemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: The course goals are to familiarize the students with basic knowledge about microbial diversity and classification, microbial biology, genetic, structure and control (bacteria and viruses) and to train them on the laboratory methods used to isolate, identify and control animal bacterial pathogens.
The course will introduce the students to the defensive mechanisms, the regulation of immune host response against pathogens, the host-microbe interaction, and the treatment and control of animal pathogens.
The course will give to the students the opportunity to know and apply serological diagnostic methods and to learn the good laboratory practice, including lab biosecurity and reliability of results and their interpretation.
Examination methods: Written test in the first session of exams; in the next session the exam will be oral. Changes in the mode of examination will be comunicated to the students.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated on relation to the knowledge acquired.

Lab sessions:
• Execution of serological methods for the diagnosis of infectious diseases: agglutination, immunofluorescence assay, ELISA, serum lysozyme determination.

practical lab activities: 10 hrs

The Course is completed with practical training during Tirocinio (4nd Year of the Course), an hands-on activity performed under the supervision of a teacher.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Students have access to the Moodle platform of the University of Padua (, where they may find PowerPoint presentations of theoretical lectures, links to specific websites, and scientific documents provided by the teacher. Students are also encouraged to improve their knowledge on textbooks available in the library of the vet school.
