Syllabus
Prerequisites: Attendance to the course needs previous attendance to Molecular
Biology, Zoology, Histology and Veterinary Embryology course. To be admitted to the examination, the student must have passed the examination of the Molecular Biology, Zoology, Histology and Veterinary Embryology course.
Target skills and knowledge: The NEUROANATOMY course is centered on the functional study of the central and peripheral nervous system of mammals in comparison to man. Part of the course will deal with the development of the brain.
The course ANATOMY OF THE LOCOMOTOR APPARATUS is aimed at describing the relevant aspects of the locomotor apparatus of domestic mammals.
Examination methods: NEUROANATOMY: the final examination is made up oral examination.
ANATOMY OF THE LOCOMOTOR APPARATUS:the final examination is made up by a practical part (in the dissecting room) and a theoretical part (oral examination).
Assessment criteria: Students will be evaluated based on understanding of the arguments, acquisition of the correct anatomical terminology, and identification of specific anatomical targets.
Course unit contents: NEUROANATOMY: the course will describe in detail the neural basis of sensory perception and motility control in the different species of animals with emphasis on the differences with man. The course will deal also with the neuroendocrine regulation of bodily functions and the role of the visceral nervous system The course includes practical sessions in the dissecting room ANATOMY OF THE LOCOMOTOR APPARATUS: the course is made up by three separate but complementary parts, dedicated to the skeleton, the joints and the muscles, respectively. The anatomy of the locomotor apparatus will be studied with a practical approach based on functional observations. Special attention will be dedicated to the dog, cat and horse. The locomotor system of large animals will be described only when relevant to veterinary medicine and meat inspection. The course includes practical sessions in the necropsy room and in the museum of the faculty. Students have continuous free access to the collection of bones.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists on two parts:
NEUROANATOMY:(3CFU), (25 hrs theoretical lessons, 5 hrs practical lessons on necropsy room).
ANATOMY OF THE LOCOMOTOR APPARATUS:(3CFU), (25 hrs theoretical lessons, 15 hrs practical lessons on necropsy room).
