Prerequisites: For the Social Psychology part of the course, basic knowledge is that acquired in the General Psychology part.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will acquire theoretical knowledge of the basic principles of Psychology. For the Social Psychology part, central topics of the discipline will be deepened, regarding social perception, social influence, and social relationships. The student will achieve essential skills for the understanding and analysis of psychological processes – general and involved in social relationships – and will learn to apply research designs and instruments, useful for work activities.
Examination methods: The final grade will be the joined evaluation of both exams: General Psychology and Social Psychology. For both parts of the course, exams will be written and will consist of both true/false and multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions. International students will be given the opportunity to give the exam in English.
Assessment criteria: Preparation of students will be evaluated on the basis of the understanding of theoretical problems debated in General and Social Psychology. Evaluation will be based also on the ability to translate knowledge into applications.
Course unit contents: The part of General Psychology will focus on the characteristics of psychology as a science and the methods used in research. Then, the course will address basic themes of General Psychology such as perception, attention, memory, language, emotions, intelligence, thought, and motivation. For the Social Psychology part, the central topics of the discipline will be analyzed, which concern how individuals perceive the social world, social influence processes, and how individuals relate to others. Specific problems analyzed will be: impressions and stereotypes formation; prejudice and discrimination; conformism, attitudes and persuasion; aggression and altruism; leadership and group productivity; conflict and cooperation between groups.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: General Psychology: Frontal lessons, practical experiences in laboratory or in class, and interim checks on students’ learning process.
Social Psychology: During lessons, all the program contents will be discussed. The theoretical discussion of the topics will be frequently complemented by examples of research. Moreover, measures to assess psychosocial constructs will be presented. The active and critical participation of students will be fostered.
