Syllabus
Prerequisites: No prerequisites.
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the main problems of the historiography on the Ancient Near East.
Knowledge of the chronology of the Ancient Near East civilizations from the Protodynastic Age to the fall of the Persian Empire.
Knowledge of the institutional, social, political, economic, religious and cultural structures of the main socio-political entities of the Ancient Near East.
Examination methods: Final oral exam.
Assessment criteria: The judgment of the student's preparation will be based on the understanding of the lessons' subjects, on the acquisition of the concepts and of the methodologies commented in the lessons, and on his ability in developing them in autonomy and with self-consciousness.
Course unit contents: Learning of the chronological structure and the geography of the Ancient Near East.
Learning of the linguistic characters of the main Near Eastern regions both synchronically and diachronically.
Learning of the cultural, political, institutional, economic and religious characteristics in the Ancient Near Easter regions in the various historical periods.
Direct approach (in-class reading) to a relevant selection of cuneiform texts in translation: chronological problems, literary commentary, commentary and interpretation according to the points of views of history, culture, ideology, politics and religion.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Part 1. General historiographic problems: sources, methodological approach, historical and ideological interpretation of ancient Near Eastern texts.
Part 2. Commented reading of selected cuneiform Sumerian and Akkadian texts in translation.
Part 3. The Ancient Testament as a historical source: formation of the Biblical text, anaysis of Pentateuch.

Additional notes about suggested reading: Part 1: Liverani's manual.
Part 2: Ancient Near Eastern texts in translation given by the teacher.
- Notes: Students of the "Laurea Triennale in Storia" who cannot assist to the lessons can replace Part 2 with one of the following volumes:
