Prerequisites: Basic concepts of mathematics and physics learned in high school.
Target skills and knowledge: The crisis of classical physics and the birth of modern physics. Basic concepts of special relativity and quantum mechanics. Elementary particles and modern cosmology. The methods of theoretical physics and the continuous comparison with experimental data.
Examination methods: Oral examination of about 30 minutes.
Assessment criteria: Knowledge of the course topics and communication skills.
Course unit contents: First part: historical approach

AS1. The classical physics of Newton and Maxwell.

AS2. The special relativity of Einstein.

AS3. Planck and the black-body radiation.

AS4. Einstein and the photoelectric effect.

AS5. Bohr and the atomic model.

AS6. De Broglie and Schrodinger: the wave-like properties of matter.

Second part: thematic approach

AT1. Evolution of the concepts of space and time.

AT2. The physical reality: from the classical picture to the quantum picture.

AT3. The elementary constituents of matter.

AT4. Chronology of the early universe.
