Prerequisites: No previous knowledge of the subject is required: the basic notions of metrics, stylistics and rhetoric will be explained during the lectures.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide students with:
– the knowledge of the principles of Italian metrics from its origins to the twentieth century;
– the knowledge of the main methods used in stylistic analysis of poetic texts;
– the ability to analyze an Italian poem from a metric and stylistic point of view.
Examination methods: At the end of the course an optional written test will be held, consisting of a metric-stylistic analysis of an Italian poem (chosen out of three proposed options) about which no published commentary exists. During the written test, students can make use of any books, notes or tools they deem necessary.
The oral exam is compulsory. For those who have taken the written test, the oral exam will be based on two main questions; for the others, on three. During the course, the list of the main questions will be provided: they will focus on the texts analyzed in class and provide only the starting point of the oral interview.
Assessment criteria: The written test will assess the ability to apply the tools and techniques of textual analysis explained during the course.
The oral examination will assess
- the expertise acquired in the area of metrics and stylistics;
- the knowledge of the texts and authors examined in class;
- the student's logical-argumentative skills.
During the course, the teacher will provide more detailed information on the assessment criteria for both written and oral tests.
Course unit contents: - The basic principles of Italian metrics: prosody, rhyme and metrical forms of the poetic tradition.
- The tools of stylistic analysis.
- The analysis of a series of exemplary texts of Italian literature, from a metric and stylistic point of view.
- The relationship between poetry and music in Italian literature.
- During the final part of the course (consisting of three credits out of nine), the lecturer will examine the style and prosody of Giorgio Caproni’s poetry through the analysis of a series of texts.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is based on lectures, which however will often take the form of a seminar through in-class activities and questions to the students. The principles of metric and stylistic will be taught through the analysis of texts.
Students who cannot attend are required to establish a personalized reading list with the teacher.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The texts analyzed in class will be immediately available on the course Moodle page. Further optional references will be provided during the lessons. At the end of the course, a file containing all the main citations used during the lessons and a list of questions and basic concepts for the oral exam will be uploaded on the Moodle page.
