Syllabus
Prerequisites: Statistics I
Target skills and knowledge: After completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. perform basic demographic analyses using various techniques, correclty interpret interpret the information gathered by the different demographic methods, and ensure their comparability across populations;
2. identify appropriate sources of data;
3. know and interpret the main current demographic phenomena with specific reference to developed countries and Italy;
4. produce simple population projections.
Examination methods: Exam sessions: written. Students are expected to answer some theorical questions and to do some exercises that prove their competence in the use of methods of demographic analysis. The final grade could be integrated with that of 2 or 3 short reports about some specific themes prepared by students during the course.
Assessment criteria: For attending students, course evaluation is based on:
70-80% final exam
30-20% students' written reports
Course unit contents: 1. Total population change: growth rates and doubling times; balancing equation; birth, mortality and migration rates.
2. The demografic transition in the developed and in the developing countries. The Italian DT.
3. Sources of demographic data.
4. Population composition by several characteristics (sex, age, marital status, etc.): measures, graphic representations; population aging; household and family structures.
5. Introduction to the dynamic of population: crude and specific rates; standardizations.
6. Lexis scheme, demographic flows, vital events. Probability and rate. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis.
7. Mortality: life tables, stationary population associated to the life table; infant mortality.
8. Fertility: intensity and timing measures; cohort and period measures; parity specific fertility.
9. Changes of the characteristics of Italian population during the last 50 years: a synthesis. Some contemporary problems.
10. Net and gross reproduction rates
11. Couple's formation and dissolution. The Second Demographic Transition in Europe and Italy within the European context.
12. Internal and international migration: measures and trends.
13. Population projections: methods and assumptions.

Additional notes about suggested reading: The main textbook is Livi Bacci: "Introduzione alla demografia" (Loesher, 2004). The content of the book is integrated with slides prepared by the teacher(s), short articles, and a reading list about some specific topics.
