Prerequisites:

All the exams of mathematics, physics and chemistry. 
Target skills and knowledge:

The course gives basic notions of special relativity and quantum mechanics with applications to atomic physics and quantum optics. 
Examination methods:

Midterm and colloquium. 
Assessment criteria:

Acquired knowledge and skills exhibition. 
Course unit contents:

1. Special relativity: relativistic kinematic and dynamics;
wavelike properties of light and particlelike properties of matter.
2. Particlelike properties of light: blackbody radiation;
fotoelectric effect; Compton effect; pair production.
3. Wavelike properties of matter: De Broglie wavelength; waves of probability; DavidsonGermer experiment; Heisenberg uncertainty principle.
4. Atomic structure: Bohr atom; quantized energy spectrum; electromagnetic transitions; laser light.
5. Quantum mechanics: complex numbers; timedependent and stationary Schrodinger equation.
6. The quantum hydrogen atom: Schrodinger equation for the hydrogen atom; radial and angular quantum numbers numeri; elettronic cloud of probability; selection rules; Stark effect; normal Zeeman effect.
7. Manyelectron atoms: spin and Pauli exclusion principle; periodic table of elements. 
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

48 hours of theoretical lessons and 12 hours of exercises.

The text is HallidayResnikWalker. The book of GuicciardiniIntrozzi is suggested for historical and philosophycal insights.
