Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student is expected to have skills and knowledge of Mineralogy and in particular of the chemico-physical characteristics of the main rock-forming silicate minerals.
Target skills and knowledge: The course provides knowledge of description rocks forming the crust and mantle and provides the essential skills for the comprehension and interpretation of rock-forming process. The laboratories provide the students with the competence necessary to write a technical-scientific report.
Examination methods: PRACTICAL examine:
- macroscopic crystalline rock specimen recognition
- thin section petrographic rock description under polarizing microscope, preparation of a written tecnica-scientific report
- exam with multiple choices regarding the theory of Earth Sciences (the interior of the Earth, plate tectonics, magmatic processes, metamorphic processes.
Assessment criteria: Competences of the main topics, organic answers, use of proper vocabulary, quality of talk.
Course unit contents: Main topics:
- general concepts of evolution of Earth’s crust
- Main petrogentic processes and the link with geological processes.
- chemical, physical and mineralogic aspects of rock formation
- magmatic processes: magmas, fractional and equilibrium crystallization of simple silicate systems, classification and nomenclature of magmatic rocks, magmatic series and their geologic setting
- metamorphic processes: factors and mechanisms of metamorphism, metamorphic grade and facies, regional and contact metamorphism, migmatites, classification and nomenclature of metamorphic rocks.

Exercises:
- macroscopic and microscopic recognition of rocks.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The oral classes will be undertaken with power-point slide projections, microscopic recognition of rocks will be done with polarizing microscope which allow recognition of mineral based on their optical properties.
Additional notes about suggested reading: All power-point slides will be uploaded on the Moodle portal of the Biology Department and will be accessible before onset of classes so that the student can integrate it with his own notes.
