Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics, and mathematics
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of this course is to give the basic principles and methods for (i) understanding the earth as a planet (e.g. earth form and relationships between earth and sun), the atmosphere (air pressure, winds, moisture, precipitation), and the hydrosphere; (ii) analysis and interpretation of landforms and geomorphological processes; (iii) using topographic and geomorphological maps.
Examination methods: Oral
Assessment criteria: Students are assessed according to the following criteria: (i) ability to explain and discuss about the different topics, using appropriate terminology; (ii) ability to link different topics and to give an overall interpretation of landscape (e.g. to link a range of forms and processes within a given area); (iii) ability in using topographic maps (e.g. interpretation of main physical features from topographic maps).
Course unit contents: Earth form and geographic grid; relationship between earth and sun.
The atmosphere. Insolation and temperature; atmospheric pressure and wind; global atmospheric and oceanic circulation; atmospheric moisture and precipitation.
Global climates: classification of the different types of climate.
The hydrosphere.
Landforms and geomorphological processes: structural; gravitational; fluvial; karst; glacial; periglacial; aeolian; costal.
Basic concepts of cartography: type of maps; cartographic projections; coordinate systems.
Laboratory: use and interpretation of topographic (IGM and CTR) and geomorphological maps.
One day field excursion.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures using Power Point; laboratory using topographic and geomorphological maps; one field excursion focusing on different geomorphological aspects (karst, fluvial, glacial forms and processes).
Additional notes about suggested reading: .pdf files of lectures and laboratory sessions are provided to students.
