Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of Cell Biology and Histology (in order to can easily recognize the tissue organization of organs) and General Zoology and Systematics (in particular, chordate systematics)
Target skills and knowledge: To obtain a global vision of structure, development and evolution of vertebrates.
Examination methods: Written practical exam followed by an oral exam.
Assessment criteria: In the written practical exam, the ability to recognize and describe the vertebrate anatomical specimens showed to students during the laboratories will be evaluated. In the oral exam, the knowledge of treated issues during frontal lessons and the ability to link them each will be tested.
Course unit contents: Basic concepts on the comparative methods, analogy and homology. The chordate bauplan: Tunicates, Cephalochordates and Vertebrates. Early development, comparative embryology, embryonal origin of organs and their derivatives in adults. Structure and evolution of organs, vertebrates adaptations to different environments, with reference to the following systems: integument, skeleton, muscle, nervous, endocrine, alimentary, respiratory, circulatory, excretive and reproductive.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lessons in classroom.
Laboratory: microscopic and macroscopic analyses of specimens regarding the considered apparats/systems
