Prerequisites: Basic elements of geometric optics, nature of the em wave, Fourier transforms and complex numbers. It is suggested to have already followed the lectures (and passed the exams) of Calculus 1, 2 and 3 and Physics 1 and 2.
Target skills and knowledge: The goals of this course are: 1) to achieve some basic elements of optics that are necessary for the experiences in the optical laboratory; 2) to known how to plan and organize an optical experience on the breadboard (Michelson interferometer, Abbe experience, light diffraction); 3) to realize the experience and get an idea of the error measurements. The course (48 hours) includes theoretical lectures (20 hours) and laboratory experiences (28 hours). The student will learn how to work with a Laser light and how to plan an optical experience.
Examination methods: Oral exam on the content of the lectures and optical laboratory experiences. It will consist of: 1) a discussion of the results of an executed experience; 2) some questions on the theoretical part. It is foreseen an exercise at the bearboard where some optical components should be mounted.
Assessment criteria: The final evaluation is based on the work done by the student during the whole course as well as on the level of knowledge of the theoretical part. Is is highly appreciated the exposition of a report of the executed experiences in the optical laboratory.
Course unit contents: 1) Theoretical lectures: Elements of interferometry, wave superposition, light diffraction, gratings, optical design of telescopes and spectrographs, elements of spectroscopy, theory of imaging, optical filters, the PSF, the Laser.
2) Experiences in optical laboratory: Measurements of the wavelength of a Laser, measurement of the refraction index of a prism, the construction of a spectrograph, the Abbe theory of image formation, the optical filters, the light diffraction from various slits.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Half of the lectures are in classroom (i.e. frontal lectures) and half are in the optical laboratory. Lectures are given in Italian.
