Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of basic mathematics and physics.
Target skills and knowledge: Main objective of the course is to introduce students to the observational astronomy, through lectures about the instrumentation and most common observational techniques of photometry and spectroscopy. The course includes practical exercises on reduction techniques and analysis of CCD data, as well as the practical use of the telescope for spectroscopy.
Examination methods: The exam is divided into two parts:
1) a discussion of the written report based on the activity in the computer laboratory.
2) an oral exam on the topics of the lectures.
Assessment criteria: The overall assessment of the student is based on the scientific and technical quality of the written report and related activities performed in the computer laboratory, knowledge and understanding of the arguments discussed during the lectures.
Course unit contents: 1) Lectures: Diffraction through a slit. Diffraction and interference through the double slit. The diffraction grating. Examples of spectrographs slit, echelle, multi -object and integral-field. CCD detectors.
2) Exercises in the computer laboratory: Use of databases and archives of astronomical data. Outline of time required procedures and access to telescopes. Introduction to IRAF. Procedures for the reduction and analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data.
3) Observations at the telescope: Derivation of the rotation curve of a spiral galaxy. Montecarlo technique to derive errorbars.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will consists of:
1) lectures.
2) exercises in the computer laboratory.
3) observations at the Asiago Astrophysical Observatory with the Galileo telescope and the Boller & Chivens spectrograph.
Lectures are given in Italian.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Lecture notes by the teacher and didactic material are available through the website of the course on the e-learning platform of the Department of Physics and Astronomy "G. Galilei" (https://elearning.unipd.it/dfa/). No suggested textbook are provided.
