Prerequisites: Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Modern Physics. Fundamentals of Theoretical Physics.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will learn how to apply the ideas of Quantum Mechanics to real physical systems. Approximate perturbative methods will often be used in order that the students will become able to evaluate the influence and extent of the approximation introduced to solve the problems. Main goal of the course is to build quantum mechanical models to explain all basic aspects of the emission and absorption atomic spectra, of the molecular bond formation, and of the propertied of solids. The model outcomes will always be compared with the experimental results.
Examination methods: Written examination carried on the Moodle infrastructure of the Pauda University.
Assessment criteria: The level of understanding of the student will be ascertained by looking at his/her ability to grasp the physical problem and to apply the relevant physical analysis.
Course unit contents: Spectrum of Hydrogen. Its fine structure.
Degeneracy. Selection rules. Identical particles. He atom. Pauli principle. Spinors. Many electron atoms. Slater wave functions. Hartree-Fock method. Central field approximation. Periodic table of the elements. Perturbations from the approximation of central field. LS and jj coupling. Zeeman effect. Molecular structure. Born-Oppenheimer approximation. H2+ molecular ion and H2 molecule. LCAO and MO methods. Rotovibrational spectra of molecules.
Anharmonic potentials. Crystalline solids. The lattice and the reciprocal lattice. X-ray diffraction. Lattice with a base.
Elastic and thermal properties of solids. Phonons. Lattice and electrons specific heat. Fermi gas. Electrons in crystalline solids. Free electron in a solid. Electrons in a lattice. Bloch theorem. Dynamics of Bloch electrons. Metals, insulators and conductors.
