Syllabus
Prerequisites: Having attended a basic Organic Chemistry course
Target skills and knowledge: Main processes of the petroleum industry; chemistry and properties of polymers; main equipment of the chemical industry.
Examination methods: Oral. Questions on petrochemistry/chemical plants and on polymer chemistry.
Assessment criteria: Students must demonstrate that they have acquired knowledge about the content of teaching and the ability to discuss the issues proposed during the examination
Course unit contents: Fractionation of crude oil and refining of petroleum liquid fuels: topping, cracking, reforming, isomerization, alkylation.
Hydrocarbons for the petrochemical industry: olefins by steam cracking, aromatics, butadiene, isoprene, styrene.
Polymeric materials: classification of homopolymers and copolymers.
Constitution, configuration and conformation of macromolecules.
Mechanisms of polymerization.
Polymerization processes.
Thermodynamics and kinetics of polymerization.
Copolymerization kinetics.
Definition of average molecular weights and molecular weight distribution.
Glass transition.
Crystallization of polymers.
Processing of polymeric materials.
Compounding.
Fibers.
Elastomers.
Description of the main equipment of the chemical industry: valves, pumps and compressors, heat exchangers; distillation, absorption and stripping columns; chemical reactors.
