Prerequisites: Adequate knowledge of General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide at the student a strong background on the main areas of the applied inorganic chemistry.
At the end of the course the student will have an overall vision of the the various types of inorganic materials, on the methods of preparation, on the correlation between structure and properties, on the environmental impact and on the quality of life.
Examination methods: Oral exam.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criteria will be based on the acquired knowledge and the ability to explain.
Course unit contents: Phosphorus and phosphoric acid: production and uses.
Building materials: lime, gypsun, cement, concrete and additives.
Glass: composition, production, properties and uses.
Traditional and advanced ceramic materials: production, properties and uses.
Cast iron and steel: production, properties, alloys and uses.
Alluminium: production, properties, alloys and uses.
Zeolites: structure, composition, properties and uses.
Ion Exchangers: types, properties and uses.
Natural waters, wastewater: types and treatments.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The specific preparation will be obtained through a wide educational path which include lectures supported by video projections, short films and visits to companies in order to put the student in touch with the reality of an industrial process.
