Target skills and knowledge: Industrial Hygiene
The student must acquire the necessary knowledge to understand the dangers (and related risks) present at the workplace (chemical, physical and biological) including research laboratories. Is trained on methods for exposure assessment both environmental and biological.
Examination methods: Written (multiple choice)
Assessment criteria: Based on the knowledge acquired and the ability to understand the information provided during the course.
Course unit contents: Industrial hygiene
Legislation in the field of occupational hygiene, occupational accidents and occupational diseases; technical and sanitary facilities responsible for control and protection. The assessment of industrial hygiene: preliminary inspection and investigation; the technical-toxicological tests, strategies and planning of environmental investigations. The risk assessment in the workplace: meaning and procedures. Sampling of dusts, fibers, fumes, gases and vapors: instant sampling, sequential, integrated and continuous sampling; personal sampling. Methods of measurement and evaluation of physical pollution: noise, vibration, microclimate, lighting, ionizing and non-ionizing radiations. Elements of ergonomics. The maximum tolerable concentrations: the TLVs for Chemicals (TLV-TWA TLV-STEL, TLV-C); TLV for mixtures and carcinogens; limits for physical contaminants. How to define and meaning of the limit values ​​and reference values. Limits of the law in Italy. The safety in the workplace: the notions of accident prevention. Pollution in confined spaces and the living environment. Techniques for primary and secondary prevention. The personal protective equipment. Outline of industrial toxicology: absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of toxicants. Biological monitoring: indicators of dose and effect.
