Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge on theoretical models of normal and pathological psychological development
Target skills and knowledge: During the course students should acquire the following knowledge and skills:

THEORETICAL BASES OF CLINICAL AND DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEW
1. Knowledge on principal stages of the diagnostic process and on the specific aims of the clinical-diagnostical interview.

2. Knowledge on advantages and limits of the clinical interview as compared to other psychodiagnostic tools.

3. Knowledge on the assessment of the clinical problem, including causative, precipitating and perpetuating factors. This knowledge would include the ability of recollect psychological and psychopathological anamnesis and the use of psychodiagnostic tools.
4. Knowledge on the basic techniques in the clinical interview including, facilitation and clarification. This knowledge would also include the ability to change techniques in response to specific problems and difficulties.
5. Knowledge on the principal models of diagnosis in psychopathology
6. Knowledge on the principal techniques to collect clinical and anamnestic information
7. Knowledge on interviews techniques with specific populations (e.g., ageing population, minors etc.).


PRACTICE OF CLINICAL DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEW:
8. Develop organizing skills to perform the clinical-diagnostic interview in different context and to build a functional and efficient therapeutic alliance

9. Develop the ability of evaluating symptomatology and all the factors that may influence the psychosocial functioning of the patients

10. Develop the ability of studying patients’ cognitive, affective and behavioral areas.

11. Develop the knowledge to organize and merge the pieces of information acquired with the interview with those obtained with other tools (questionnaires, observations, psychophysiological evaluations) toward the formulation of a exhaustive diagnosis.
Examination methods: Final examination is based on a written exam.
The written examination is composed by a part with multiple choice questions (14 questions for a total of 25 points) and another part with a clinical simulated case. In this part the student should highlight the missing information and illustrate how to complete the clinical-diagnostic process (two open questions each for a maximum of three points). The total duration of the exam is 45 minutes.

For Erasmus and foreigners students it will be possible to agree on tailored program and exam. For Erasmus and foreigners it would be possible to sustain an oral exam in English.
Assessment criteria: For the part of the exam on the clinical case the following will be evaluated:
1. Degree of the aquired knowledge
2. The use of appropriate terminology
3. Skills in clinical judgement and reasoning

Regarding the part with multiple choice and fill the blanks questions the following will be evaluated:
1. Degree of the aquired knowledge
2. Reasoning skills and ability to put together the different topics of the course
3. The use of appropriate terminology
Course unit contents: Theoretical underpinnings of clinical interview
Diagnosis in Clinical Psychology
Clinical interviews and patient’s needs
Analysis of the clinical problem
Evaluation of functional impairment
The clinical interview in its different phases (including, request of the first visit, psychological anamnesis, deepening evaluations)
Other tools for diagnosis in clinical psychology (questionnaires, tests, psychophysiological measurements).
The patient-psychologist relationship an the therapeutic alliance
Models and techniques of the clinical interview
Management of the clinical interview
Integration of different pieces of information toward the diagnosis
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: During the course the above-mentioned topics will be discussed in their general aspects including the use of exemplificative examples. Students are asked to complete and expand these topics on the suggested text-books.
Clinical cases simulation and presentation will be presented. Clinical cases will be presented and discussed interactively including the psychological and psychophysiological aspects of the assessment.
Clinical cases as well as the slides presented during the course will be available to students who cannot attend classes regularly.
Additional notes about suggested reading: All the material used for classes (including slide presentations and video) as well as video will be uploaded on the moodle platform.
