Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Anatomy and the functioning of the major organ systems (blood, heart, kidneys, liver, digestive system, nervous system).
Biology knowledge especially in relation to the physiology of the cell: the cell cycle, the genome, DNA replication and transcription, protein synthesis.
Basic knowledge of Genetics: chromosomes, alleles, genes, genetic mutations, Mendel's inheritance.
Target skills and knowledge: Have an overview of the areas of Pediatrics.
acknowledge the peculiarities of development and welfare needs of each pediatric age.
Know the major health problems of during childhood.
Knowing the principles of clinical evaluation of infant, child and adolescent.
Recognize and define the urgency/clinical of most prevalent childhood acute, chronic, and genetic diseases.
Examination methods: written exam on 32 multiple choice questions (5 choices).
Assessment criteria: EACH CORRECT QUESTION = 1 POINT
The FINAL SCORE will be the sum of the correct answers;
31 or 32 CORRECT ANSWERS = 30 eLODE.
Course unit contents: • Paediatrics area and specificities – Urgency and triage
• The newborn: classification and characteristics; adaptation to extrauterine life, newborn assessment
• the premature newborn and most frequent pathologies, feeding in the 1st year of life, breast milk, formula milk, weaning.
• health checks in the Growth and developmental milestones of childhood, growth disorders
• Introduction to Genetics and genetic diseases
• Metabolic screening, hyperbilirubinemia of the newborn, neonatal-onset genetic diseases, complications and treatment
• Pain in children
• febrile convulsions and fever
• CNS diseases, with particular reference to infectious disease (meningoencephalitis)
congenital infection (toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, herpes, rubella, EBvirus)
• Respiratory infections and principles of assistance, the asthmatic disease, cystic fibrosis.
• metabolic diseases with particular attention to obesity and diabetes
• gastrointestinal tract and more frequent disease in children (vomiting, diarrhea, RGE, dehydration, celiac disease, food intolerances)
• Cardiovascular system: heart failure, congenital heart disease.
• Kidney disease
• Elements of neuropsychiatry:
- Psychomotor development
Neurodevelopmental disorders with particular regard to:
- Intellectual Disability
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Disorders of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
- Eating disorders
