Syllabus
Prerequisites: Chemistry and Metallic Materials
Target skills and knowledge: Learning the of basic knowledge on thermal and thermomechanical treatments and their influence on the final technological properties of materials. Knowledge of the main techniques, atmospheres and defects coming from the use of thermal treatments and applicable controls. Identification of the main cost items related to the thermal treatments.
Examination methods: Written and oral examinations.
Course unit contents: Metallic materials and Fe-C phase diagram. Quenching theory and techniques. Steels quenchability, TTT and CCT curves. Influence of heat treatments and composition on mechanical properties. Surface treatments of steels: nitriding, carburizing, carbonitriding, induction hardening, flame hardening, EB tempering, laser hardening. Heat treatment of structural steels. Heat treatments and coatings of tool steels. Controlled atmospheres in HT and relative furnaces. Heat treatments of cast iron. HT of light alloys: aluminum, magnesium and titanium. The main thermomechanical treatments and their influence on properties. Metallographic and mechanical testing, and quality controls. The main non-destructive tests.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lectures. Training activities in the metallurgical laboratories.
