Syllabus
Prerequisites: Physics and Electrotechnics courses (BSc level).
Target skills and knowledge: The course has the following expected skills:
- Knowledge of the principle of operation of the main electric motors;
- Understanding of the terminology and meaning of the electric drives parameters;
- Ability to identify the most suitable motors and control methods in relation to the required dynamics and precision;
- Ability to read and interpret catalogs for the choice of electric drives in mechatronic applications.
Examination methods: The verification of the expected skills is carried out by a written exam, including both open and closed questions, with multiple choice. The test is aimed at verifying the acquired knowledge. Given the applicative nature of the course, often the questions are similar to those of an oral exam, i.e. more oriented towards the discussion of a topic than the solution of an exercise.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criteria used in the knowledge and skills verification are the following:
- Completeness of the theoretical knowledge acquired in the principles of torque generation in different electric motors;
- Ability to discuss the fundamental equations of electric machines and the related model block schematics;
- Level of autonomy acquired in interpreting catalog data and in selecting the right motor, according to project specifications;
- Absence of knowledge gaps in key concepts involved in the course.
- Ability in clear and accurate exposition of concepts.
Course unit contents: The specific contents of the course can be summarized as follows:
- Definition of electric machine. Functional block diagrams. Aspects of cost, efficiency, performance. Topologies of reluctance, electrodynamic, induction systems.
- Three-phase voltage inverter, square wave and sine-triangle PWM modulation. Space vector modulation.
- Principle of operation of the DC motor. Analysis of technical catalogs.
- Permanent magnet synchronous motor drives. Selection criteria, SPM and IPM motors. Example of selection of synchronous motor from the catalog, according to the project specifications. DC brushless motors.
- Asynchronous motors, operating principle. Voltage and torque equations at steady state. Start-up techniques. Scalar control, Volt / Hertz technique.
- Stepper motors (VR, PM and hybrid). Pull-in and pull-out curves. Converters for stepper motors. Step motor drive, a design example.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course comprises the following activities:
- Theoretical study and classification of systems that implement the electromechanical energy conversion. In particular, examination of reluctance, electrodynamic and induction systems, as a basis for understanding torque production in electric motors;
- Classification of electric motors, based on their functional characteristics;
- Study of the structure and characteristics of DC and AC motors.
- Examples of a real design of an application, with the choice of the motor through the careful comparison of commercial alternatives.

All material will be made available on the Moodle educational platform. The complete course notes will be available from the beginning of the course. The OneNote handouts will be provided as the lessons are given.
