Syllabus
Prerequisites: Course on Signals and Systems
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide students with the following skills:
1. understanding the concept of control problem and its importance in engineering applications, with particular reference to the areas electro-mechanical and electronic;
2. understanding of the idea of feedback control and its advantages compared to the "open loop control";
3. be able to use mathematical models to equations of state and input / output;
4. be able to design a control system for an elementary system, known its mathematical model and assigned the specifications of the controlled system.
Examination methods: Two tests during course or final written exam
Optional oral test, only with postitive evaluation of the written exam.
Assessment criteria: The written exam and course tests will focus on assessment of knowledge of the topics covered in class and capacity reached to design control systems from specifications
Course unit contents: Introduction to the problem of control. Theory of dynamical systems LTI continuous time. Modelling of electrical, mechanical and electromechanical systems. Elementary systems of first and second order. Frequency responses and polar diagrams. General properties of feedback. Stability of feedback systems. Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion and Nyquist stability margins. The root locus. Sensitivity function, system type and steady-state error. Frequency response of the closed loop system. Standard PID controllers. Design of controllers in frequency domain. Elements of digital control. Simulation and control of dynamic systems with Matlab / Simulink.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures with video projected slides and blackboard. Exercises at the computer and in the classroom..
Additional notes about suggested reading: In addition to the reference textbooks, the teacher proposes the slides of lessons and additional material (including simulation programs open source) on the moodle site of the course
