Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basics of algebra, trigonometry and calculus.
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the basic principles of Mechanics and Thermodynamics.
The student should be able to analyze simple physical systems and apply the general laws to the cases at hand.
The theoretical course is integrated by laboratory experiments.
Examination methods: Passing of a written test, consisting in the solution of a few problems, is required to access the oral exam.
Assessment criteria: Knowledge and mastering of the general laws of Mechanics and Thermodynamics, and the ability to apply such laws to the solution of simple problems.
Course unit contents: Kinematics of the particle and relative motions; Dynamics of a particle, systems of particles and particularly the rigid body.
Particular attention will be devoted to the conservation laws of energy, momentum and angular momentum, as applied to different systems and in particular the rigid body and collisions.
Short introduction to the statics and dynamics of fluids.
Thermodynamical systems, first and second principlo of Thermodynamics, applied in particular to ideal gases. Thermal machines and refrigerators.
Introduction to the laboratory experiments, with a simple account of the theory of errors in measurements.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, approximately 60% theoretical and 40% devoted to exercices and examples. Completed by three experiments in the laboratory
Additional notes about suggested reading: Besides the textbook, slides of the lectures, problems assigned in recent examinations with solution, notes about the laboratory and other material will be available.
