Syllabus
Prerequisites: None.
Target skills and knowledge: Helping students to develop a conceptual understanding of physics principles is a primary goal of the course. The fudamental concepts of Mechanics and Thermodynamics will be presented as well as the way they fit together to provide a coherent description of natural phenomena. Theory will be always followed by exercizes and applications in order to show students that physics principles come into play over and over again in everyday life. Selected laboratory experiences will help students to face simple practical problems.
Examination methods: Written and oral examination.
Assessment criteria: Ability to solve simple exercises. Knowledge of the theoretical bases, in particular those required by second year courses.
Course unit contents: Program: Introduction and the physical method. Kinematics and dynamics of the particle, impulse and momentum, work and energy. Systems of particles, statics and dynamics of a rigid body. Oscillatory motion. Collisions. Statics and dynamics of fluids. Thermodynamical systems, first and second law of thermodynamics and their applications to ideal gases. Heat machines and refrigerators. Introduction to laboratory.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lecture-style instruction, 3 laboratory practicals.
