Syllabus
Prerequisites: Physics, Hydraulics, Thermodynamics and heat transfer.
Target skills and knowledge: To get base knowledge about the operation, performance and applications of energy conversion machines and plants.
Examination methods: Oral examination and discussion of the lectures content and of the homework assigned.
Assessment criteria: The student must demonstrate a good knowledge of the operation principles of the fluid machines and their plants and technologies.
Course unit contents: Machines and plants for energy conversion and use: general considerations.
Operation principles of fluid machines: turbomachines, displacement machines.
Hydroelectric plants.
Hydraulic pumps: characteristic curves, choice and applications.
Funs and compressors: characteristic curves, choice and applications.
Gas turbine plants: schemes, thermodynamic cycles, performance.
Steam power plants: schemes, thermodynamic cycles, main components.
Combined and cogenerative plants.
Systems and components for the exploitation of renewable sources.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The student must get sufficient knowledge of the operation, performance and applications of energy conversion machines and plants, through theoretical lectures, laboratories and visits of significant power plants.
