Syllabus
Prerequisites: none
Target skills and knowledge: Define and understand the main steps of an industrial facility feasibility study, the techniques of plant location and layout design in a manufacturing environment and the quantitative techniques for production systems (lines, job-shops, cells) design.
Examination methods: Written exam with two theoretical questions and two numerical exercises
Assessment criteria: Written exam evaluation, the sufficiency in all questions is needed
Course unit contents: 1) Introduction and definitions: Industrial facility typologies and design criteria.

2) Industrial Facility Feasibility Study: main steps, cost curves, design indexes and decision variables, computation of the optimal production capacity.

3) Plant Location Techniques: rectangular distances, gravity problem, the Kuhn approach.

4) Plant Layout Design and main techniques.

5) Design of flow line manufacturing systems, job shop systems and cellular manufacturing according to a Group Technology paradigm.

6) Material flow study, process flow diagram, from-to chart, examples. Relationship chart, examples. Case studies.

7) Industrial System Maintenance: definitions, variables, methods and strategies.

8) Service facilities: definitions and classification. Water plants and fire prevention systems.
