Syllabus
Prerequisites: No prerequisites required
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge related to the physical metallurgy with particular attention to the analysis of the interactions processes-defects-microstructure-property (chemical and mechanical).
Basic knowledge of inorganic chemistry
Examination methods: written and oral
Assessment criteria: Acquisition of concepts and proposed methodologies, ability to apply them
Course unit contents: Chemistry (3 credits) :
The atomic structure of matter. The chemical reactions . The electronic structure of atoms. The periodic classification of the elements. The chemical bond . Thermochemistry and principles of chemical thermodynamics . Electrochemistry : galvanic cells .
Metallic Materials (6 credits) :
Crystal structure : crystal lattices ( CCC, CFC , EC ) . Lattice defects : point, line and surface . Plastic deformation and movement of dislocations. strengthening by defects . Diffusion: Fick's laws . Industrial application examples : carburizing and nitriding . Solidification of metals: homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation and growth . Subcooling . Cellular and dendritic solidification . Solidification of ingots and castings. Allotropy and polymorphism. Work hardening and recrystallization . Hot working and cold working. Microstructure of the work hardened materials . Residual stresses. Solid solutions. Strengthening by solid solution and dispersion . Diagrams of equilibrium . Non-equilibrium solidification. Segregations . Fe-C diagram ( steels and cast irons ) . Outline of isothermal and anisotermal transformation of steels ( TTT and CCC curves ) and influence of the alloy elements on the kinetics of transformation. Transformations of pearlite , bainite and martensite . Treatments : quenching ( hardening and tempering) , annealing . Surface hardening : induction hardening , thermochemical treatments ( carburizing , nitriding ) . Classification of steels. Stainless steels. General information on cast iron : main types of cast irons and their production, influence of alloying elements. Mechanical testing and properties: hardness and micro-hardness tests, impact tests, tensile test
