Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basics of differential and integral Calculus.
Differential vector operators: curl, gradient and divergence.
Target skills and knowledge: Learning the fundamentals and the basic modelling methods for electric circuits, electric machines and power distribution systems. Acquisition of the basics principles of operation and safety of the electric energy systems and of the electric machines .
Examination methods: written test (numerical exercises + questions)
+ oral examination (short discussion)
Assessment criteria: written test + oral examination
Course unit contents: Electric circuits in DC and AC conditions, Fundamentals of Electric Machines, and of Electric Power distribution Systems
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Fundamentals of electric circuits, electric current, electric voltage, ampere-meter, voltmeter. Electric power and wattmeter. Kirchhoff's laws, energy balance. Linear and non-linear 2-terminal elements, multi-terminal elements. Resistors, Inductors, Capacitors, Diodes, ideal and real generators.
DC circuits, series and parallel connection, voltage divider and current divider. D/Y transformation; Methods for linear DC circuit analysis: superposition of effects, Thevenin and Norton equivalent circuits.
AC circuits: Steinmetz's transform for voltage and current, impedance, admittance. AC circuit measurements. Symbolic Kirchhoff's laws. Series and parallel connection. AC power: instantaneous, active, reactive, complex and apparent, power balance. Frequency-domain analysis of RLC circuits.
3-phase systems, phase-to-phase and phase-to-neutral voltage, equivalent single-phase circuit, power measurement, reactive power compensation,
Magnetic induction. Magnetic field (Faraday-Henry-Neumann. Ampère e Gauss) in the presence of ferromagnetic materials, hysteresis loop. Inductor, magnetic energy. Mutual inductor, magnetic energy. Magnetic Circuits. Energy and force in magnetic circuits. Rotating magnetic field.
Power Transformers: operation principle, equivalent circuit, voltage drop, efficiency.
Fundamentals of rotating electrical machines: electric and mechanical power, torque, efficiency. Asynchronous Induction Motors: operation principle, equivalent circuit. Operational principles of synchronous machines and brushless motors.
Fundamentals of power distribution systems: fault protection and Italian safety codes for power distribution systems. Direct and indirect contacts, magneto-thermal and differential. protection.
