Syllabus
Prerequisites: No prerequisites.
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course the student will have gained the main theoretic and technical information, design and measurement skills about noise reduction and environmental and building acoustics, with a particular reference in industry and in building services.
He will have gained also the main theoretic and technical elements of illumination engineering.
Examination methods: Written test based on two open questions, and some closed questions (multiple choice answers).
Following oral examination will be centered on the discussion of methods and results of the measurements related to two short dissertations assigned during the course.
Assessment criteria: The written examination must be completed with two short dissertations individually assigned during the course, regarding the utilization of a sound level meter individually lent, and processing and analysis on measurements done with sound level meter and other instruments of the acoustics laboratory.
The written test will be evaluated on the basis of deep and precison of the knowledge of theoretical and technical aspects. The oral discussion of the dissertations will be evaluated on the basis of the knowledge of measurements techniques, and the capacity to correctly explain results.
Written test mark weights 2/3 on the total mark.
Course unit contents: Fundamentals. Psycho physical acoustics. Outdoor sound propagation: noise barriers. Room acoustics. Sound proofing. Sound absorption. Sound and vibration control in utilities and services for buildings. Noise inside and outside industrial buildings. Measuring sound. Laws and standards on acoustics.
Elements of lighting. Photometric. Colorimetry. Lighting efficiency. Lamps and lighiting equipment. Lighting design.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lessons based on power point slides.
Laboratory activity based on:
- environmental and building acoustics measurements;
- determining the sound power level of a sound source by means of sound pressure measurements ,and individual lending of a sound level meter;
- intensimetry measurements.
