Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of ancient, medieval and modern history
Target skills and knowledge: - vocabulary of history of political thought
- basic knowledge of the main authors and themes of the course; their historical and political context; acquisition of political and philosophical concepts of each author or theme
Examination methods: Written exam with open-ended questions.
Course unit contents: ATTENDANTS STUDENTS:
The first part the course will focus on the historical development of political thought from Ancient Times to the second half of the Nineteenth Century AD., referring to the following authors and themes: Plato; Aristotle; St. Thomas Aquinas; Marsilio of Padua; Niccolò Machiavelli; Thomas Hobbes; Baruch Spinoza; John Locke; Benjamin Constant; Alexis de Tocqueville; Pierre-Joseph Proudhon; Karl Marx.
The second part of the course will focus on the political thought of European Enlightenment and on the emergence of concepts of secularism, religius tolerance and fredom referring to the following authors: Thomas Hobbes, Baruch Spinoza, John Locke, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Cesare Beccaria

The historical development of political thought from the fourth century BC to the second half of the Nineteenth Century AD., in reference to the following authors and themes: Plato; Aristotle; St. Thomas Aquinas; Marsilio of Padua; Machiavelli; Utopian thought; Hobbes and absolutism; Locke and the origins of liberalism; Rousseau and democracy; the Enlightenment; the American Revolution; the French Revolution; Constant and modern liberty; Tocqueville; Proudhon: socialism and anarchism; Marx and communism
