Syllabus
Prerequisites: Fundamental tools of micro and macroeconomics
Target skills and knowledge: The course is built with two modules: location theory and regional development.
Knowledge and competences acquired at the end of the first module:
- what factors affect the location choice of economic activities (especially for firms)
- to understand the dynamics of location phenomena, especially in urban places
- to analyze the spatial dynamics and the spatial evolution of economic activities.

Knowledge and competences acquired at the end of the second module:
- pre-conditions of regional economic development
- what factors determine the economic growth of regions
- phenomena of convergence/divergence in the regional economic patterns
- the role of agglomeration economies for economic development and the core-periphery patterns in the national economic systems
- how to measure the local economic impacts of economic policies
_ The European economic policy for regional development
Examination methods: Written exam with closed and open questions.
Assessment criteria: For the attendant students the final exam is based on topics discussed during the course and on the special topic introduced at the beginning of the course.
For the non-attendant students the final exam is based on the comprehension of the handbook.
Course unit contents: Course contents:
Industrial location models; definition of market areas and urban rent; regional development theory; the role of supply and demand for regional economic growth; regional competitiveness and core-periphery patterns; policies for regional development and the European strategy for regions.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures with power point slides.
Integrative readings during the course.
In-class working for specific topics.

Additional notes about suggested reading: The exam for attendant students is based on slides, integrative readings, handbook chapters and lecture notes.
The exam for the non-attendant students is based on chapters 1-9 (included) of the handbook.
