Syllabus
Prerequisites: The course requires basic knowledge of legal concepts in the private law field.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at developing the following competencies and abilities:
1. To understand the impact of the “Europeanization” regulation process upon private-to-private relationships and on business activities.
2. To understand the essential features of the European legal order and the principle of subsidiarity
3. To critically assess the nature and operation of rules of UE law and the “level playing field” of the Internal Market
4. To understand how businesses could take advantages from the European fundamental freedoms, and why/how they might be affected by competition rules
Examination methods: Teamwork (presentation to the class of an assigned topic/paper) and Final written exam consisting of a legal case-study and open-ended questions on the topics covered in class and in compulsory readings.
Assessment criteria: Your grade is determined as follows: 30% Teamwork; 70% Exam. For students not regularly attending the course the grade is determined solely on the basis of the written examination.
Course unit contents: The course is divided in two main parts. The first part covers the following topics:
- Aims and policies of the European Union
- Sources and supremacy of EU law
- Impact on domestic legal rules

The second part covers the following topics:
- Establishment and functioning of the Internal Market
- Role of the fundamental freedoms relating to goods, establishment and services
- Product standardization and consumer protection
- Competition law with a focus on concerted practices and abuse of dominant position

Additional notes about suggested reading: Materials for the final exam preparation include : class slides, your personal notes and compulsory readings. Class slides will be posted on the course website prior to each lecture. Compulsory readings will be announced at the beginning of each lecture. All the class slides and readings are compulsory exam material (slides/notes do not replace readings and readings do not replace slides/notes).
