Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge in plant and animal biology, as well as skills in ornamental plant identification.
Target skills and knowledge: Acquisition of a methodology that allows to apply the knowledge acquired during the course, exploiting, in particular, the ability to use bibliographic and on-line resources.
Examination methods: Written exams on both theoretical and practical part of the course.
Assessment criteria: Knowledge on the topic discussed during the course and skills in pest identification.
Course unit contents: Pest (sap-suckers, gall-makers, defoliators, xylophagous) and beneficial insect categories (pollinators, natural enemies). For the most important species included in each category, the main morphological features, the ecology, the life cycle, the main symptoms, and the tools available for the management will be discussed.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Each topic will be addressed through lectures (2 hrs/week) as well as lab and field activities (4 hrs/week).

The recommended book can be used for acquiring more detailed information, but this is not mandatory.
