Syllabus
Prerequisites: Prerequisite for the course is a basic knowledge of biology, physics, inorganic and biological chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: The course provides a knowledge on the main agronomic factors affecting crop production and the environmental impact of agriculture, focusing on the mutual influences of environment and agricultural practices, the main factors affecting crop production, soil fertility evolution and the main effects of agriculture on environmental management.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated considering the acquired knowledge and the ability of organize the knowledge for a proper managment of the cultivated field
Course unit contents: Climate factors affecting crop production: solar radiation, evapotranspiration (definitions, methods for estimating evapotranspiration), rainfall, temperature effects on crops, wind.
Soil and fertility parameters: texture and structure, main types of soils, soil organic matter and its evolution, amendment of problematic soils; water retention and water dynamic in soils; the soil atmosphere and its variations throughout the year. Natural soils and substrates.
Soil tillage. Main types of tillage and their effect on soil characteristics.
Problems related to excess waters: erosion and waterlogging. Land improvements and drainage networks for plain and hilly locations.
Irrigation: computation of irrigation volumes, methods of irrigation and their efficiency, problems related to the quality of irrigation water.
Fertilization: organic and mineral fertilizers, effect of fertilization on crops, efficiency, methods of distribution; loss of phytonutrients and methods to control environmental diffuse pollution; the Nitrate Directive and its application.
Cropping systems: main types of agricultural productions, rotation and its effect on long-term sustainability. Weeds and weed control: prevention and non-chemical methods; chemical weed control and Integrated weed management.
