Prerequisites:

A) Solid linguistic competence and language skills at the C1 level. B) A pass mark on the TAL test. C) Motivation: active interest in communication practices |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
Raising awareness of communicative patterns and practices in written texts and oral interactions. Development of analytical skills in text analysis and of metapragmatic competence. Familiarization with the content, structure and wording of compliments and complaints. Raising awareness of communicative competence.
Consolidation of translation skills, argumentation skills, and oral production skills. Development of the ability to transfer information/argument from Italian into English and to recognize the differences between English and Italian as language systems. |
Examination methods:

[PRE-REQUISITE: 1) TAL-C1 (reading, listening, writing)]
WRITTEN TEST:
2a) composition of a short text realizing a compliment or a complaint
2b) functional analysis of a short text realizing an compliment or a complaint.
2c) written translation test into English
ORAL TEST:
3a) oral test on the grammatical and discursive characteristics of English and Italian
3b) dialogic exchanges oriented toward the realization of, and reaction to, compliments and complaints
3c) in addition, FOR NON-ATTENDERS ONLY: critical discussion of the content of two reading assignments relevant to the course topics, previously agreed upon with the lecturer
NB: I) obtaining a pass mark on the TAL-C1 is a pre-requisite for sitting the written test; II) obtaining a pass mark on the written test is a pre-requisite for sitting the oral test. |
Assessment criteria:
|
- For text analysis: accuracy, completeness and co-/contextual motivation of text interpretation.
- For oral/written production: lexico-grammatical accuracy; originality/variety of content; register appropriateness; organization of the text/ management of the interaction; consideration of the interlocutor's needs
- For the translation and oral interview: grammatical correctness; critical understanding of the punctuation, paragraphing, textual requirements of English vs Italian
- in addition, FOR NON-ATTENDERS ONLY: For the critical discussion: perceptiveness, logical and analytical thinking |
Course unit contents:
|
1) The course will introduce students to basic concepts in pragmatics as relevant to speech acts (face, politeness, moves, contextual variables). Students will analyse in detail the structure, content and contextual appropriateness of compliments and complaints from a pragmatic perspective. Course participants will be given extensive practice in the production of oral/dialogic and written/monologic speech acts.
2) Translation practice (into English) of texts on historical events, and oral production practice with a focus on cohesion and argumentation in both speech and writing |

Course material comprises lecture notes, and texts and resources made available during the course (photocopies, Moodle material), an advanced learner's monolingual English dictionary, a bilingual English-Italian dictionary (e.g. Hoepli, Zanichelli). |
