Syllabus
Prerequisites: Interest in communicative practices
Perceptiveness
Critical thinking
Willingness not to take the principles and mechanics of interaction for granted
Target skills and knowledge: Learning key concepts in pragmatics;
Becoming aware of the linguistic resources for intentionally and conventionally conveying meaning;
Understanding some of the mechanisms accounting for the encoding and decoding of meaning in text and context;
Identifying possible correlations between linguistic expressions and their context of use;
Plausibly accounting for the theoretical-practical interpretive analysis of contextualized linguistic expressions
Examination methods: Attenders:
Either 1) a written test with open-ended questions
Or 2) a term paper reporting in detail the design, realization, findings and implication of a pragmatics project individually carried out by the students, whose topic and goal requires the lecturer’ approval

Non-attenders:
a written test with open-ended questions
Assessment criteria: i) for the term paper (attenders only): motivation, value, design and critical discussion of the findings of the research project and accuracy, thoroughness, precision, register-appropriateness and coherence of its report
ii) for the written exam: logical, analytical and critical thinking; firm grasp of the concepts and examples covered in the readings.
Course unit contents: Deixis; context; inferences; the cooperative principle; politeness; (extended) speech acts; morphopragmatics; conversational structure; (if possible, also: variational pragmatics; cross-cultural and L2 pragmatics; grammaticalization-lexicalization; developmental pragmatics; pragmatic disorders)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teacher-fronted lessons; pair- and group- work activities
Additional notes about suggested reading: Course material comprises texts and resources made available during the course (e.g. Moodle), and lecture notes for attenders.

OTHER: - Students are expected to actively participate in the course by discussing their own communicative experience in class and to keep up with the assignments.
- Attending students who choose to write a term paper are expected to obtain the lecturer’s approval of their proposed research topic(s), goal and design during office hours at least 2 months before submitting the term paper.
